Why are we a raw feed, no grain rescue?
Here we need to talk about POO. Yep, poo.
Watching what comes out of the other end of your dog is the best and primary clue as to the health of your dog, (as is their urine), just the same as a child or even you!
BAD poo is sloppy, smelly, large for the size of the dog (it should never be more than an ample handful even for a medium to large dog), and scary colours like orange and green as well as the more ‘usual’ yellowish/brownish. Its texture is grainy like Weetabix and stains carpets. GOOD poo is solid, easy to pick up, leaves no stains, is small so easy to pass, with minimal smell and should be various shades of brown (or a little greyer/dryer when you feed the diatomaceous earth).
Basically if you feed them cr*p, the results will be cr*p. If you raw feed their poo and tummies are totally settled fast- also useful when toilet training as the odd accident is inevitable! Long term chances of the pup getting gastritis or even colitis or bloat or other intestinal blockages is reduced to pretty much zero when raw and earth fed. By the time the dog gets to you they will have already had TWO food changes. This is because our Happy Bus (transport) only feed Royal Canin, a food type available in the UK and recommended by UK vets. This is their stopgap food till they arrive to their homes. So A raw food and diatomaceous earth powder combo stops diarrhoea/mucus, settles tummies, reduces the size, sloppiness and smell of the poo, and cuts out rancid farting 100% inside the 48 hours DEFRA quarantine period, invaluable while toilet training and laying a good foundation for the health and condition of the dog. You can and should swap right away to raw with no stomach problems the minute they get off the bus. All our fosters in the UK are raw fed and adopters must stick to the same food. All our dogs in Romania get grain free kibble, puppy build up wet food and raw weekly as a treat so raw is the closest food fit for all our dogs. The only reason we don’t make it 100% a condition of adopting is that, rarely, some dogs can’t stomach it. But we expect adopters to try it, and all adopters having a dog from a UK foster must continue to feed the dog raw. Added to the raw food we use diatomaceous earth to replace chemical flea, tick, mite and worm treatments and is effective as such from 72 hours after you start giving it, and it must be EVERY DAY. So WAIT for three days before you give them a bath else they won’t be protected and are vulnerable to UK varieties of flea, tick, mite and worm. Use an approved pet perfume if they honk a bit. (We have one on our adopter product list). Kibble is dry. If you’ve had a dog on kibble you will notice they will ‘flood’ with water afterwards. This is because they’ve done the equivalent of eat ten cream crackers with nothing on them and their mouths are like a desert. Plus the water swells the kibble and makes them feel full, like a diet aid for humans to lose weight! Why would you do this to your dog? How do you feed raw? Defrost it in a sealed tub like you would mince or chicken breasts for your tea. Open the bag or tray. Get a spoon and put the required amount in a bowl.(2-3% of predicted adult weight- but it does not need to be to the gram, you can measure by eye)Add the earth. (one flat teaspoon per 10kg of dog)Add a good splash of water. Mash it. Put the bowl down. Wait ten seconds while the dog scoffs it. Pick the bowl up and wash it and clean off work surfaces just like you would when preparing raw meat for your own dinner. The supplier we recommend even deliver to most of the UK! it’s that simple! Oh, and clear a shelf in your freezer!
